Almost as soon as the airplane technology was invented, countries began to use them during wars. At start of the World War I , the war technology used was very basic. The cockpits were open and pilots used maps for navigation. However, by the time the war ended, the war airplanes got much more sophisticated and advanced with special purposes.
Fokker DR-1 tri-plane
The first true fighters to appear in World War I were the Fokker Eindecker series of monoplanes. It was the first aircraft to effectively employ a fixed, forward-firing machine. Germany started the Fokker in WWI in summer of 1915.
Albatros DIII Fighter
After being created in Germany, the Albatros fighters became among the first biplanes to be armed with two guns and may be thought of as setting a trend in fighter design which was to last for the next two decades. Having already found success in the Albatros D.I and D.II models, Robert Thelen wanted the D.III version to have better maneuverability. The Albatros D.III was the first of the Albatros series to use "Vee" shaped struts. This airplane was used during WWI and was a very useful fighter airplane.
